Late Fragment —Raymond Carver

And did you get what you wanted from this life, even so? I did. And what did you want? To call myself beloved, to feel myself beloved on the earth.

If you’re lucky in this life, you may meet someone as funny, kind, smart, and creative as John Serpentelli—he brought light to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Once you met him, your life was changed.

It’s been a year since he last walked the Earth, but he continues to teach us of the immensity of love; how far and wide and vast it truly spans; how our relationships change with death, but never end. John remains one of our great teachers. He is—and always will be—most beloved on the Earth.

I'm keeping his family, and all who loved him in my best, most tender thoughts.

Much love,

Richard Fox

John was my very first animation teacher. I was 7-12 in his Animation Stewdio location in chestnut hill. I still have two VHS tapes of my work from his program. I would grow up to get a degree in Animation from Rhode Island School of Design. I cherish these tapes and keep them in a little shrine of my most precious sentimental belongings. They are next to a pinewood derby car I made with my father when I was 9. The metaphor is clear to me in this moment, something I could not have made so expertly at such a young age age without the guidence, tools and facilities provided by an experienced craftsman and teacher. I’m feeling John’s passing deeply and so proud to be one of his young pupils, the oprotinity to be his young prodigy has profoundly shaped the trajectory of my life. With gratitude for the life of John Serpentelli.

John was a gifted animator and teacher. I was lucky to work with him, starting in 1998 when he created a short film for the launch of my online film site, The Bit Screen. I was blown away by what he created for that nascent technology and it was the first of several collaborations.
